Travelling with your dog

What you should consider when planning your holiday with or without a dog

The holiday season is in full swing again and we are all longing for the sea and the beach. But should you take your dog with you on holiday or is it better to leave him at home in his familiar surroundings? Whether he comes with you or not, this article will give you valuable tips on how to manage your holiday with or without your dog.

As a pack animal, dogs are naturally reluctant to be separated from their families.
It's important to weigh things up here: Is the journey reasonable for the animal and for you as the owner with the animal?
Are the conditions such that the holiday will be relaxing for both parties?

Before travelling, you should definitely consult a vet and seek advice on necessary vaccinations or other precautionary measures for your destination. Now that you're sure you're covered on the veterinary side, here are some checklists for the transport and holiday destination.

TRANSPORT CHECKLIST

• Do you have a valid pet passport with you?
• Is the dog used to travelling in the car?
• Can heat and traffic jams be avoided when travelling by car?
• Have you planned a break every 2 - 3 hours?
• Have you thought of enough food for the first few days?
• Is the dog secured in the car with a transport box, seat belts or nets?
• Can unsecured items of luggage endanger your dog?

TIP: Feed your pet less or not at all before travelling to prevent nausea

HOLIDAY DESTINATION CHECKLIST

• Have you booked pet-friendly accommodation?
• Are the surroundings and climate suitable for your dog?
• In the mountains: Are the planned mountain tours suitable for your dog's condition?
• Beware of joint problems, obesity and cardiovascular disease!
• By the sea: Are dogs not allowed on the beach?

Caution: Salt water, hot sand and sun can cause health problems. You can find more tips and tricks for paw care here.

TIP: Your dog will feel more comfortable in unfamiliar surroundings with its own blanket.

When the dog stays at home

Ideally, the dog should stay with a carer that it already knows well.

A new dog sitter should familiarise themselves with the dog in good time so that your dog feels more at home.

It is advisable to provide specific instructions on the animal's feeding and habits, any information on incompatible conspecifics in the neighbourhood, any regular medication and the contact details of the vet in case of emergencies.

You can also entrust your dog to a boarding kennel if you have a good place nearby.

We recommend that you visit the boarding kennel before using it to get an idea of the suitability of the accommodation for your dog.

Bear in mind, however, that separation and a change of environment can be very stressful for your dog, as he has no way of knowing whether you will return.
