Autumn is here - what to look out for in dogs & cats?

It gets dark earlier, it's foggy in the morning and the leaves are turning colour. Autumn is on its way and with it cooler, damp weather. Perfect conditions for the ever-popular colds. In this article, we reveal how you can protect your four-legged friend from a nasty cold.

Cold symptoms in dogs

In animals, the symptoms of a cold are similar to those in humans: Sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, coughing and listlessness as well as listlessness are common symptoms of a cold in dogs. Refusing food can also be a sign of illness. If you are not sure whether it is something serious, please always go to the vet.

Colds in cats

The signs are similar in cats, but they are often more difficult to recognise as cats are less likely to show that they are unwell. So keep a close eye on your feline friend: Are their eyes watering? Does the cat cough or sneeze more often? Does it withdraw more and sleep? Does it refuse food? Does it have warm ears and a warm nose? This could indicate a fever. In cats, the average body temperature can fluctuate between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius. If they have a fever, a visit to the vet is essential.

Taking the temperature of animals

Taking a temperature is probably never stress-free. However, it is easier if you get another person to help you and dip the thermometer in ointment or lubricant. A clinical thermometer with an elastic tip is best.

One person holds the animal, the other inserts the thermometer into the animal's anus and waits until the signal from the device confirms a successful measurement. If the temperature exceeds 39° C, a visit to the vet is strongly recommended.

Risk of infection?

In principle, the transmission of pathogens between animals and humans is possible. If you have contracted an illness, you should behave just as carefully towards the animal as you would towards another person. Refrain from cuddling and wash your hands regularly.

If your four-legged friend is ill, you should also pay attention to hygiene. It is important to separate pets from each other to prevent disease transmission. You should also keep children away from sick animals.

Options for prevention

Make sure you have good shelter

Dogs and cats quickly start to feel cold, especially during the cold and wet season. If your four-legged friend is exposed to the harsh weather for too long, this can weaken their immune system. Cats in particular should be offered sufficient shelter in the garden in winter. If a cat is particularly sensitive to the cold, it is worth leaving it outside for short periods only.

Dry off dogs

Dogs are not immune to colds either. If their fur is wet after a walk, you should always dry it thoroughly. For long-haired animals, it may be necessary to blow-dry them. In freezing temperatures, make sure that your dog does not sit or lie on cold ground for too long. This can trigger a bladder infection. If a dog is outside for a long time, a dog jumper will help. The most important basis and precaution for a healthy animal is a balanced diet.

Treatment: How can my pet recover quickly?

If the appetite is completely unimpaired and the animal is playing as lively as ever, this indicates a harmless infection that the animal can manage itself. In these cases, it is sufficient to allow your pet to rest and dry it thoroughly after going outside.

It is just as important that your four-legged friend drinks enough. You can also tempt cats to drink with cat milk. It is best to set out several water bowls to motivate your four-legged friends.

If the nose is blocked and the eyes are blocked, a lint-free, soft and clean cloth is suitable for cleaning.

While outdoor cats can stay indoors for a few days if they are ill, sick dogs should be allowed to exercise in the fresh air. It is important that the animals do not spend too long in the cold without exercise.

If there is no improvement after three days, you should take your four-legged friend to the vet. A protracted cold or even cystitis can have chronic effects on your pet's health.

Do not give animals human medicine

What is good for us humans can have unexpected effects on animals. A paracetamol tablet, for example, can be highly toxic to animals. Therefore, please do not use human medicine on animals. In general, you should always discuss medication with your vet.
