Frequently asked questions about initial puppy equipment

Which food should be part of a puppy's basic equipment?

The most important thing for a long and healthy dog's life is the right food. It should only contain what a dog needs. Sugar and too much grain are not included and are detrimental to your dog's health. The food should mainly contain meat and preferably be organic. Organic quality ensures that your puppy's young organism is not contaminated with pesticide or antibiotic residues. At Liebesgut you will find the best selection of good, high-quality organic dog food. Of course, the food for puppies must also be suitable for puppies. Liebesgut also offers you an extensive selection for your puppy. Please note that your dog is growing and still needs a special selection of nutrients. That is why it is particularly important to feed high-quality, organic puppy food.

Of course, you also need a bowl for the right food! The choice here is huge. They come in many sizes and designs. However, they should mainly be functional and suitable for your dog's size. Please also think about how big your puppy will be one day. This is because the amount of food your dog needs changes with the size of the dog. In addition to a bowl for food, you will also need a second bowl for water. You don't necessarily have to buy bowls, but you are welcome to use existing containers that are suitable as bowls from your household. A bowl mat is also recommended, as your puppy is sure to spill food. You can use a coaster that you may already have at home. This can then be used sustainably for the puppy's initial equipment.

Initial puppy equipment: collar or harness?

You naturally want to take your puppy for a walk and have to decide whether to use a collar or a dog harness with lead. A collar does not restrict your dog's freedom of movement. However, large forces act on your dog's neck when you pull on the lead. With a collar, these forces are distributed over a few centimetres and act on sensitive organs such as the windpipe, thyroid gland, larynx and cervical spine. The risk of excessive force is particularly high with lively dogs - and puppies are usually just lively! This is why a dog harness is recommended for puppies. The pulling forces are distributed over a larger area around the puppy's shoulders and chest. These areas of the body are much more robust than the neck area.

You can now buy dog harnesses made from recycled materials, which are available in very attractive designs. Of course, you also have the option of buying a second-hand harness for your puppy's initial equipment. This saves you money and utilises existing resources.

What toys do I need for my puppy's initial equipment?

Toys for your puppy are of course an essential part of the initial puppy equipment. You can choose between balls and toys for tugging and fetching. Puppies love to chew on their toys. Chew toys made from natural rubber are ideal for this. They are also very robust and easy to clean. Recycled suede is also a sustainable and healthy material for dog toys.

You can make any puppy happy with fetch toys. You don't have to buy any special toys here, but can use old socks or small towels, for example. You should not use everyday objects that you give your puppy to play with later, as they can sometimes be destroyed.

You can buy BPA-free balls for your puppy to chase. These balls are made without the chemical bisphenol A. This means that they do not enter the dog's system when your puppy bites them.

Please note: Tugging games are not yet suitable for puppies as they could injure their growing teeth.

You can make your puppy particularly happy with search games. You can hide treats and your puppy will be happy and rewarded when he finds them. You don't even have to spend any extra money on this!

Is there a sustainable initial puppy kit?

You can pay attention to the materials in all your purchases. Leather and natural rubber are sustainable and upcycled suede is particularly suitable as a toy. Old socks or small towels are ideal for fetching.

You don't necessarily have to buy bowls, but you are welcome to use existing containers from your household that are suitable as bowls.

Dog harnesses are now available made from recycled materials and come in very pretty designs. Of course, you also have the option of buying the harness for your puppy's initial equipment second-hand. This saves you money and utilises existing resources.
