"In our recent podcast episode, we talked about where you should focus when you're out on a walk with your dog. By not constantly focussing on your dog, but also looking into the distance from time to time, you can give your dog more structure and thus security. This also applies to dog encounters. If you feel insecure when another human-dog team comes towards you, it is particularly advisable not to look at your dog or the oncoming dog. It is more helpful to look for a point in the distance and fixate on it. This way you won't pay any attention to the oncoming team. This is helpful in two ways: firstly, you make it clear to your dog that the other dog is not important to you and does not need to be paid attention to. Secondly, you are helping the other dog to focus his attention on something other than you, as (unconscious) eye contact does not prompt him to interact with you and your dog. Even if this is certainly not the only aspect to consider in dog encounters, this small and simple change in your posture can have a significant influence on unwanted dog encounters."
