Dogs: Feeding tips for the summer

If your dog has a poor appetite in summer, this is completely normal. The body doesn't need as much external energy to maintain body temperature when it's warm. That's why your dog eats less now. Sufficient fluid intake is much more important now. These are the best feeding tips for summer:

Always provide fresh water

If your dog is too hot, he will pant. This leads to increased water loss through the respiratory tract. So always provide your pet with plenty of fresh water. You should also always have enough water with you for your dog on walks.

Feed when it's cooler

It is cooler in the early morning and late evening. This is also when your dog has an appetite and likes food.

Feed small portions

To prevent the food from spoiling in the heat, offer your pet small portions. It's best to keep the tin of wet food you've started in the fridge. However, take it out in good time before the next feed so that the food is not too cold and hits the stomach.

Offer light summer snacks

When it's really hot, our four-legged friends also like something light and refreshing for in between meals. Apples, cucumber and watermelon are healthy and contain plenty of liquid. Carrots, courgettes or lamb's lettuce provide important vitamins.

Tip: Dog ice cream

Freeze some natural yoghurt. You can refine it with honey, banana slices, blueberries or tuna. Cottage cheese or quark are also suitable for a delicious dog ice cream.
