Danger beware: foods that are harmful to dogs
There are numerous foods that can be harmful, and in some cases even fatal, to dogs. In the following list we will present some sources of danger and their effects on the animal organism:
Pomaceous fruit: harbours a similar risk of injury as bones. Some pits are sharp-edged, which can lead to internal injuries. More serious, however, is the risk of constipation, as the seeds are not digested. Small breeds in particular can suffer from this. There is a risk of poisoning from the hydrocyanic acid contained in the kernels, but large quantities of kernels must be ingested.
Symptoms: Injuries in the mouth, throat or gastrointestinal tract, constipation, intestinal obstruction
Bones: Cooked bones should not be fed to any animal species. The bones become brittle and splinter more easily when heated. This also applies to raw poultry bones. Beef marrow bones or sheep ribs, on the other hand, can be fed raw in small quantities. Too much results in so-called bone faeces.
Complaints: Injuries in the mouth, throat or gastrointestinal tract, in the worst case internal bleeding
Raw pork: Can be infected with the Aujeszky's virus. Harmless to humans, but always fatal for dogs. In Germany, the virus no longer occurs in pigs, but caution is still advised, especially with wild boar. Boiling kills the virus.
Symptoms: similar to rabies, cramps, foaming at the mouth, changes in behaviour, fits of raving madness
Salt: Is present in many foods in excessive quantities, but leads to water retention and puts additional strain on the kidneys.
Symptoms: Worsening of the course of the disease in dogs with kidney disease
Chocolate: Cocoa contains theobromine, a substance that can be broken down by humans but is toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the higher the cocoa content and the more harmful it is for the animal. A constant danger, especially at Christmas.
Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhoea, accelerated heart rate, tremors, cramps, breathing difficulties
Grapes, including sultanas: The oxalic acid they contain can lead to kidney failure. The tolerance threshold is very low in some breeds and can result in death.
Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhoea, kidney failure
Onions: Contain many sulphur compounds that attack the red blood cells. This also applies to garlic. Cooking, drying or similar does not prevent this!
Symptoms: Jaundice, bloody urine
This list is by no means complete, but only reflects some sources of danger. It is intended to show that there is always a risk of harm to the animal. Foods that should not be fed to animals as a matter of common sense, such as alcohol or coffee, have been left out of this list.
Sources of danger avoided
The best way to avoid these dangers is to refrain from feeding food to your pet. Ideally, the dog should already be accustomed as a puppy to the fact that there are no leftovers from the dinner table. This also prevents the dog from begging at the table later on.
Caution is also advised when walking your dog
Dogs are curious animals, and if they find something appetising on their daily walk, they will happily eat it. If you don't keep your dog on a lead at all times, you should train him to indicate by sound or posture whether he has found something interesting. A command such as "take" can then be used to give permission to pick it up. This gives the owner time to check the object. The command should also be practised when the dog is offered treats by other people. Poisoned baits or baits prepared with razor blades can also cause serious injuries. Unfortunately, these baits are often put out by dog haters, especially in parks and areas where there are many dogs.
The safest thing to do is to feed the products from Liebesgut :-) Because mum and dad can be absolutely sure that they contain everything their dog needs - no more and no less.
