Combing cats - how to do it right!

Cat owners know it all too well, especially in spring: hair in the home, everywhere. But it doesn't have to be that way! With a little training, even the shyest cat can get used to being combed.

We recommend combing out the loose hair at least once a week, or even daily during the shedding period. The more frequently the cat is combed, the better it will get used to it. Ideally, the animal should be familiarised with the brush as a kitten. As kittens' fur is normally groomed by their mother, the first encounters with a comb in the early weeks of life are less frightening for the velvet paws.

Brushing is only carried out in the direction of growth of the cat's fur. Most cats find this as pleasant as being stroked. If the cat resists the procedure, it is advisable to leave the brush in one of the cat's favourite places for a few days. This will allow it to slowly get used to the unfamiliar object. Then place the cat on your lap and stroke it. If the animal enjoys being stroked, use the brush from time to time between caresses. Gradually increase the frequency of brushing. The tiger will associate brushing with cuddling and will certainly find it so pleasant that it starts to purr at the sight of the comb.

A good familiarisation strategy is to reward grooming with treats, such as Liebesgut's organic beef minis. As soon as the cat understands that treats are waiting for it at the end of the treatment, it will no longer react so negative to them.

It is also important to choose the right brush or comb. There is a very large selection in pet shops. And depending on the breed or hair length, something else may be suitable. When buying, take a photo of the cat with you and ask the sales staff for advice.

And always remember: any hair that is combed out will not be found later in the home or on clothing!
