6 tips for a relaxed New Year's Eve

6 tips for a relaxed New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is a favourite celebration for young and old, but unfortunately it's not a great reason for our pets and wild animals to rejoice. The loud fireworks and crashing firecrackers often cause animals to panic as they are unable to recognise the sounds. Suddenly there is a lot of noise and they don't realise that it will soon stop again. To help your four-legged friend get through the New Year safely, here are a few tips for New Year's Eve.

1. don't leave your pet alone! To block out stimuli and noise, draw the curtains and switch on some calming music. This way, your pet will be somewhat isolated from the noisy outside world in a quieter atmosphere.

2. provide your dog with a place to retreat or hide so that he feels safe during the fireworks.

3. behave confidently towards your dog - this will show him that everything is relaxed here. Reward him when he behaves without fear, but also be there for him when he is frightened. The old wisdom of ignoring him when he is scared is outdated and pointless. Be there for him and take his fears seriously.

4. never punish your four-legged friend for anxious behaviour. This only has the opposite effect and causes even more stress. As the owner, you should have a calming effect and not fuel any further fears.

5. distract your pet, for example with intelligence toys, snack balls or treat search games. You can hide a special treat such as liverwurst or treat snacks in a Kong. This distracts attention from the noise. You will see: Occupation relaxes.

6 If your dog is particularly anxious, you should go to the vet in advance and get appropriate advice. There are medications that alleviate anxiety and stress.

This is how you recognise that your dog is afraid:

- Pinned ears

- Dilated pupils

- panting

- trembling

- hiding

- barking

- uncleanliness

- pinched tail

- crouched posture

- Nervous licking of the nose

You can prepare your dog for New Year's Eve a few weeks in advance by starting to play firework noises to him. This should be done at a low volume, i.e. barely audible, and reward him during this time so that he associates it with something positive.

On the days leading up to New Year's Eve, there is a high risk that your dog will run away if he is startled by a loud bang. So be careful not to let him run free if you are unsure whether he might run away.

I hope that these tips will help you to get your dog through the new year safely. It is important to distract him well and keep him busy. The best trick is often to give him tasty food.
